Okay, I’m back from another hiatus.
Right now we are spending some time in the South of France. We have several friends here and the suggest things to do for us. One such friend is Francesco. We met Francesco several years ago when we hired him to be our ski guide/instructor in Courchevel. Since that time, Francesco has become part of our family. He hang out with us oldsters quite a bit. He makes us laugh and is always up for an adventure. He suggested getting tickets to the Cannes Film Festival. And when I found out that TOP GUN: MAVERICK was going to be playing. Uh, yes please!
Now, going to anything at the CFF requires a tuxedo. My husband would rather poke his eyes out than wear a tuxedo. He owns one and looks fantastic in it, but hates all the rigamarole that goes with it. So, I went with Francesco. Who by the way, has not seen the first one. 🤦🏻♀️ We will be rectifying that soon. He’s young. He hasn’t seen Star Wars, either. Sheesh. Kids these days.
My main problem was that I didn’t have a dress. Much less two dresses. We went to the opening night, as well, but TOP GUN: MAVERICK was my goal. Francesco called his model girlfriends and they told him where to go. He expected an all day outing, but I’m not a big shopper, so we found the dresses in the first place we went. Oh, I love to wander around and pop in and out of stores in foreign places to see what they have, but to actually try on stuff. Ugh.
I had texted a couple of friends of ours who are in the fashion industry to ask what kind of dresses I needed, and they said, “well, it’s black tie, so a gown”. Great! Long dresses! I can wear sneakers! Or better yet, my cowboy boots. Which BTW are all the rage here in Europe and the UK. But, they have “designer” versions and they look like crap. I have some really nice Lucchese boots from Allens Boots in Austin, TX. When I told Ziad that I was wearing my cowboy boots, he had a melt down. LOL. “NO! You cannot wear cowboy boots to Cannes! It’s not done!” Uh huh….just watch me bud. After showing him the photos, he decided that it worked for me. Or he was just being nice.
We went to the opening night so we had a taste of the Red Carpet. LOTS of gigantic dresses and very pretty women wearing those dresses. President Zelenskyy, from the Ukraine, called in on zoom and made a speech. Unfortunately, my translator wasn’t working until half way thru the speech, so I only heard half of it. Then Forest Whittaker received a Palm d’Ore, and we watched a nice 10 minute montage of his films. Great actor. Great films.
The film that night was Coupez! Or, Final Cut! in English. It’s a “silly, splattery zombie horror meta-farce”. It was great. I know that some people don’t like to watch foreign films with subtitles, but this one is really is fun. It reminded me so much of filming some of the fun horror films that I was in, that I thoroughly enjoyed it. More-so because of all the behind the scenes stuff that you see in this film. Francesco was thoroughly amazed at all of it. If you like camp…then see it. If you can find it to watch.
I’ll let you watch the clip below to see our experience at the Cannes Film Festival. And also GO SEE TOP GUN: MAVERICK! IT’S FANTASTIC!
You look BEAUTIFUL! Looks like so much fun! Glad you got this adventure and happy you shared!
