We left London and headed to Bath for the night. The entire city of Bath is a World Heritage site. Not just part of it. The whole city. It is the only place in Britain that has hot springs, and the Romans built bath houses and such starting around 60 A.D.
Most of the roads were one way and/or closed for the holiday weekend. We had to park about a 1/4 mile from the hotel and carry our bags thru throngs of the unmasked masses. It was shocking, to say the least. The hotel made us mask up, and sanitize our hands when we arrived, and had implemented a one way traffic scenario: up the elevator, down the stairs. But, we decided that we needed to stay away from the crowds so we headed out of town to walk the Bath and Claverton Down path. It’s a 9-ish mile trail that’s listed as one of Britains top 100 walks. However, when leaving the hotel, as requested by the one-way only in the hotel I found a staircase and descended all the way down the emergency exit and got stuck in the alley. I had to be rescued by my brothers. Bill showed up with the manager to free me. 🤪
By the time we were done with the hike, we were famished. Because of the “Eat Out to Help Out” campaign where the government is paying 50% of the food bill, getting a reservation last minute is impossible, so we wandered around a bit to find a place to eat. Luckily, we found a restaurant who had a no-show for their reservation, so we took their slot and had a nice dinner. Then we went back to the hotel for the night, and crashed.
The next morning we woke up to a much quieter Bath, since the crowds had gone back to London. We met our tour guide to take a tour of the Roman Bath House, and the Abbey. We had lunch then headed out of town for Stonehenge. What a treat we had! Stonehenge normally hosts over 11,000 visitors a day. But, now it’s down to 2000, and we ended up getting a slot in the ‘after hours’ group of less than 30 to get to walk in the middle of Stonehenge.
We then drove 2 hours to our next stop for the night with a dear friend, who’s house as been standing since the late 1400’s. Excellent food, excellent company, and an excellent night sleep.
Love it!
Love the update! Could not see video! Tiny and I got stuck in staircase in paris, we were trying to just walk down the stairs and both doors were locked! I had to call the front desk to get bailed out of staircase!
