We had a long way to go today, 16 miles, so we started off before sunrise. We were not the only ones, though. I think there were 6 pilgrims that passed us by the time the sun had come up.
We had a 500 foot hill to climb in a little under a mile with a 12% grade to go up. We crested the hill just as the sun came over the horizon. It was a great view into the valley. We walked across that for a kilometer or so, then we had to go down at an 18% grade. At least this side was a nice concrete road. But, we got a look at where we were headed. Very far away, and very flat.
I cannot stress enough how much the audio books are keeping me sane. Right now, I’m listening to The Plant Paradox, but Steven R. Gundry, MD. Listening to it on audiobook is much more enjoyable than reading it. For Sure.
We crossed bridges, followed canals, saw some amazing vistas, and increase our time from 24 minutes per km, to 17 minutes per km. Our feet our very tired. But, we feel fitter, which is obvious by our increase in speed.
I decided to pay for the correos to lug my backpack everyday until Leon. We have 8 days of 12+ miles per day, and with my other issues yet to be resolved, I didn’t want to be as miserable as I had been. So, while it was a long day, it was a much more pleasant day. The guys lightened there loads a well.
We arrived in Fromista walking along a canal which was pleasant as it was tree lined. It was nice hearing the birds. There was the option to take a boat along the canal the last 2 km, but alas, they only operate from Wednesdays thru Sundays, and today is Tuesday.
Once again, I think we are the only ones in our hostel. We all have our own rooms, and bathrooms. And the lady running the hostel greeted us warmly and brought us beer. Interestingly, we have had the keys to the front door for many of these hostels. They give us a room, then disappear. At a couple of places, there was only us. Like the big hotel we were in last night. Really odd. There is a restaurant I can see right outside my window. But, now, I think its time for a small nap.
